The new design of the Station Street fire hall called for a two storey concept in order to utilize the site and still allow proper clearance for service vehicle traffic. Built as part of Belleville’s Fire Hall Headquarters and Emergency Operations Centre, the facility included a number of operational and support services. The second floor was fully fitted to accommodate fire fighters on duty with dormitories, a kitchen, lounge, fitness rooms, locker rooms, washroom amenities as well as housing the emergency communications (dispatch) area.
Several challenges were encountered during this project. Storm water management, neighbouring properties, additional coordination for geotechnical and the demolition of the existing building added to the depth of this undertaking.
In summary, the building was resolved within the site limits as set out by the City of Belleville, the scope required an additional 16 percent of floor area to be accommodated which was achieved to mutual satisfaction.
